Let’s Go Fly A Kite

Whether you’re a kite enthusiast on vacation or you’re visiting Southern California on a budget, Laguna Beach is an excellent place to fly a kite. Most people don’t think of kite-flying as a Laguna Beach activity, but with excellent ocean breezes and wide open areas, just about anyone can get a kite soaring with ease!

Choose a Kite to suit your needs…

  • Diamond - The classic diamond or “Eddy” kite comes in mini to very large, from low-cost beginner to high-quality, state of the art advanced fliers. The kite you remember from childhood can easily be found, are a great choice for children and often come in “make your own” packages.
  • Sport Kites - The sport or “stunt” kites are typically prism designs capable of flying in any wind condition. It does takes some mastery of the dual-lines for even a novice to launch this kite, but with some practice, you too can execute aerial “ballet” figures. Though challenging at first, these kites are great fun for families and hobbyists.
  • Power Kites - These large foil or inflatable kites are advanced kites for sports recreation. Popular sports such as kitesurfing and kite landboarding use powerful controllable kites to propel riders at high speeds, often lifting them off the ground or water to “catch air.”

Head to a local beach or park…

  • Heisler Park - This large grassy park rests on the cliffs above several adjacent beaches (Main Beach, Picnic Beach, Diver’s Cove, and Fisherman’s Cove). Ocean breezes and open areas are just a short walk from Downtown Laguna Beach for the most convenient kite flying.
  • Bluebird Park - Bring your kites and spend a whole day at this little local secret, because this park has something to offer everyone! There are large grassy areas, a variety of playgrounds, and even a free summer concert series to keep you entertained.
  • Treasure Island Park - The grassy area on the cliffs above Treasure Island Beach has excellent wind conditions. Whether you’re having a picnic with the kids or on a romantic afternoon walk through the sculpture garden, spend some time flying a kite here.
  • Top of the World Park - Alta Laguna Park is our favorite spot for kite flying in the hills high of above Laguna Beach. Winds are often strong, plenty of amenities and parking, but best of all are the stunning ocean vistas.

If you don’t have a kite of your own or can’t bring it along with you to The Retreat in Laguna, there are several locations to purchase everything from novelty toy kites for the kids to power kites for kite-loving adults.
